Today if someone was to say they do not have or carry a cell phone we would look at them like they have ten heads. We are all so connected to not only people we reach out to via mobile, but also to the web to search, post our status and become “mayor” of a placed we visit frequently. The smart phone trend continues to grow and is not slowing down. The speed of mobile usage and smart phones reaches the ages as young as 10.
Google which is the power house of search engines and the other major search engines recognized the trend that seems to be growing as fast as the speed of light. Google is usually a browser on smart phones and/or an app. Bing is also a browser on smart phones and/or an app with wireless companies. Since Google acquired Motorola there will definitely be some cool developments for smart phones and I am sure tablets in the near future.
ComScore came out with a very interesting study and breakdown of smart phone usage and growth. ComScore stated, “This new paradigm means that for traditional retailers’ to successfully navigate this changing landscape in 2012 they must build strategies that address audiences across these devices throughout their shopping and purchasing process, or risk losing that customer’s sale to the savvy retailer who looks for the interception by being in front of the consumer at every step of the sales funnel.” If you do not have a mobile friendly web site you actually may be losing business.
Consumers today like the convenience of being able to take their computer with them and fit the size of their palm or at least the size of a book when it comes to tablets. Going digital is a must to gain and keep customers. The graph above shows the growth of the different mobile devices that are being used on a daily basis. Who would have thought that you can arm your house, turn on lights, shop, and research, and take photos and movies with a computer the size of your palm? Simply, in a word… cool.
